Mohammad Kaif Raises Concerns About Varun Chakaravarthy's Performance Ahead of T20 World Cup Semi-Final
Concerns Over Chakaravarthy's Mindset
Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has expressed worries regarding Varun Chakaravarthy's mental approach as the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final against England approaches, scheduled for March 5 in Mumbai. Kaif believes that the mystery spinner tends to become anxious when faced with aggressive batting, which can lead to ineffective bowling strategies.
Kaif's Insights on Chakaravarthy's Technique
In a discussion on his YouTube channel, Kaif noted, "Batters are now coming in well-prepared, fully aware of how to tackle him. This could lead to potential issues. I've observed that when he concedes runs, he occasionally exhibits signs of panic, evident in his reactions. Instead of maintaining his usual wicket-to-wicket length, he begins to bowl more towards the pads."
Kaif further analyzed that Chakaravarthy has predominantly relied on his googly during the tournament, with batters treating him similarly to an off-spinner. He elaborated that opponents are anticipating the inward turn of the ball, allowing them to strike confidently down the ground. "Throughout this World Cup, I feel he has bowled very little leg-spin," Kaif remarked.
Chakaravarthy's Recent Performance Statistics
Chakaravarthy's performance statistics indicate a decline in form. He took nine wickets during the group stage but managed only three in the Super 8s, with an economy rate of 10.17. Overall, he has secured 12 wickets in seven matches, averaging 15.33 with an economy of 7.66.
Suggestions for Improvement
Kaif recommended that Chakaravarthy should concentrate more on his leg-spin to transform his googly into a surprising element rather than a predictable delivery. "He can bowl outside the off-stump line with his leg-spin and then introduce the googly as a variation. If he continues to bowl only googlies, batsmen may start to read him better," Kaif advised.
Chakaravarthy's career statistics show he has taken 71 wickets in 43 T20 internationals, with an average of 15.63 and two five-wicket hauls.
