Prime Minister Modi's Strong Message on National Security

During his speech on Independence Day from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that India will not accept nuclear threats or coercion from Pakistan. He stated that New Delhi has established a 'new normal' by treating terrorists and their supporters as one and the same.

Modi also remarked that 'blood and water cannot flow together', indicating the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan.

Economic Reforms and GST Changes Announced

In his address, Modi revealed that significant reforms to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) would be introduced by Diwali, aimed at providing relief to small and medium enterprises. He assured that taxes on essential goods would be lowered, making everyday items more affordable.

Additionally, he announced the establishment of a 'high-powered demography mission' to address the issue of 'infiltrators' affecting the livelihoods of the youth.

Congress Chief's Critique of BJP's Tactics

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of resorting to unethical practices to maintain power. He asserted that the party's campaign against alleged electoral malpractices is focused on preserving democracy rather than merely winning elections.

Kharge claimed that the intensive revision of Bihar's electoral rolls was manipulated to disenfranchise opposition voters, alleging that living individuals were incorrectly declared deceased.

Tragic Toll from Jammu and Kashmir Floods

The death toll from the flash floods caused by a cloudburst in Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir, has risen to 45, with over 50 individuals still unaccounted for. Kishtwar's Additional Superintendent of Police, Pradeep Singh, reported that around eight to ten victims have been identified, with efforts ongoing to identify the others.

The cloudburst occurred on Thursday at 12:25 PM, near Chashoti, the last accessible village en route to the Machail Mata temple, where many devotees were present for the annual yatra.

NITI Aayog's Economic Growth Projections

BVR Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, stated that for India to achieve developed economy status by 2047, an annual GDP growth rate of 8% is necessary, rather than the previously suggested 6.5%. He noted that while this may seem like a small increase, the long-term impact would be significant.

Earlier, NITI Aayog member Arvind Virmani had indicated that a growth rate of 6% to 6.2% would suffice for India to reach developed status by its centenary of independence in 2047.
