Election Results Spark Controversy

New Delhi: On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a jab at the Congress party following their poor performance in the recent MLC elections, where paper ballots were used—a significant demand from opposition groups in their critique of electronic voting machines (EVMs).

In Karnataka, the Congress party failed to secure any seats, while the BJP claimed five legislative council positions in Uttar Pradesh, and the Samajwadi Party won three seats as the results for the biennial elections across 28 upper house constituencies in four states were revealed.

Modi shared a post on 'X', questioning, "MLC elections in 28 seats across 4 major states—Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Karnataka. Elections conducted with ballot papers. Can you guess how many seats Congress won?"

Counting commenced on Tuesday and was still ongoing in certain areas.

The elections for six teachers' and five graduates' constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, along with four in Bihar, two in Karnataka, and three graduates' and two teachers' constituencies in Maharashtra, took place on October 23.

In Maharashtra, the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti coalition was leading in three seats, while the opposition NCP (SP) was ahead in two. The Jan Suraaj Party made its debut in Bihar, with the BJP, JD(U), RJD, and an Independent candidate each winning one seat.

The Congress faced a significant defeat in Karnataka, losing all four seats, with the JD(S) capturing one seat from the ruling party, while its ally, the BJP, retained three.

The Congress and various other opposition parties have been advocating for future elections to be conducted using paper ballots instead of EVMs.
