Modi and Trump Set for Key Meeting at G7 Summit in France
Upcoming Bilateral Engagement at G7
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to meet with US President Donald Trump next week during the G7 summit in France. This encounter will be their first face-to-face bilateral discussion since Modi's trip to the United States in February of the previous year. The Prime Minister's itinerary includes visits to France and Slovakia from June 13 to 18, where he will engage in talks with French President Emmanuel Macron and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, in addition to participating in the G7 Summit scheduled for June 16-17 in Evian, France.
A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) indicated that PM Modi will interact with G7 leaders, invited partner nations, and international organizations during the summit. While the MEA did not disclose specific leaders that Modi would meet, it confirmed that he would hold several bilateral discussions on the summit's sidelines.
Significance of the Modi-Trump Meeting
The anticipated meeting between PM Modi and President Trump comes amid ongoing dialogues between India and the United States on various strategic, economic, and geopolitical matters. During the summit, PM Modi is expected to share insights with G7 leaders and representatives from invited partner countries and international organizations. Key discussion themes will likely include forging new partnerships, rebuilding international solidarity, promoting balanced and sustainable economic growth, and ensuring a swift and effective rollout of artificial intelligence.
Last week, Trump confirmed his attendance at the G7 Summit in France, raising expectations for a potential meeting with Modi. The significance of this meeting cannot be understated, especially considering the fluctuating dynamics of India-US relations since Modi's visit to Washington in February 2025. Tensions have arisen, particularly when Trump imposed tariffs on Indian exports and later increased them due to India's oil purchases from Russia. During the India-Pakistan conflict last year, Trump claimed credit for preventing what he termed a potential 'nuclear war.'
Despite these challenges, both leaders have maintained communication through several phone calls in recent months. Relations appear to be improving following the visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to India last month, where he updated PM Modi on advancements in bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including defense, strategic technologies, trade, energy security, and education. Additionally, India and the United States are nearing the finalization of a bilateral trade agreement, with a US delegation visiting India earlier this month for discussions on trade and economic collaboration.
