Prime Minister Modi's Call for Peace

New Delhi, Mar 5: On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the urgent need to resolve conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine, asserting that military confrontation is not a viable solution. His comments came following extensive discussions with Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

Modi stated, “Both India and Finland uphold the principles of law, dialogue, and diplomacy. We concur that military conflict cannot resolve any issue. Whether it’s Ukraine or West Asia, we are committed to supporting efforts for a swift resolution and peace.”

The discussions also led to an agreement to enhance collaboration between India and Finland, particularly in digitalization and sustainability, aiming to establish a strategic partnership.

He remarked, “This partnership will encompass areas from AI to 6G telecommunications, and from clean energy to quantum computing, thereby energizing our cooperation in various high-tech fields.”

Additionally, Modi highlighted that the anticipated India-EU free trade agreement would strengthen economic relations between India and Finland, stating, “This agreement will further enhance trade, investment, and technological cooperation.”

President Stubb's four-day visit to India, which commenced on Wednesday, is focused on bolstering bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and critical technologies.

In a related development, following the sinking of an Iranian warship by a US submarine in international waters near Sri Lanka, the Congress party raised concerns about the government's silence on the matter.

Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the Prime Minister, stating that the country requires strong leadership, but instead has a “compromised PM who has surrendered our strategic autonomy.”

He warned that the current global situation is precarious, with “stormy seas ahead,” and pointed out that the conflict has implications for India, especially with the sinking of the Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean.

Gandhi expressed concerns over the potential threat to India's oil supplies, noting that over 40% of imports pass through the Strait of Hormuz, and the situation is dire for LPG and LNG supplies.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Modi administration of neglecting India's strategic interests, stating, “An Iranian ship, a guest of India, was returning unarmed from the International Fleet Review 2026 hosted by us and was torpedoed in the Indian Ocean Region. There has been no expression of concern or condolence from the Prime Minister.”
