Aizawl, Sep 7: The electoral rolls in Mizoram have seen notable adjustments during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, resulting in the removal of 78,442 names and the addition of 39,243 new voters, bringing the total voter count in the state to 8.35 lakh.
As per the Chief Electoral Officer, Garima Gupta, the updated rolls now include the state's first elector identifying as third gender, alongside 4 lakh male and 4.32 lakh female voters.
Prior to the SIR, Mizoram had 8.75 lakh registered voters, all of whom received enumeration forms. Gupta noted that 8,28,906 forms were successfully collected, while 46,162 were not retrieved, leading to the deletion of those names.
"The draft electoral rolls published on July 4 listed 8,28,906 electors. During the claims and objections phase, which concluded on September 2, 32,280 names were removed, while 39,243 were added, resulting in a net increase of 6,963 electors, or 0.84 percent, in the final rolls," Gupta explained at a press conference.
Aizawl district boasts the highest voter count at 2.78 lakh, followed by Lunglei district with 97,172 and Lawngtlai district with 90,715. Conversely, Hnahthial district, established in 2019, has the fewest voters at 15,522.
Among constituencies, Tuichawng in Lawngtlai district has the most electors at 37,236, while West Tuipui in Lunglei district has the least at 14,667.
Aizawl North-I saw the largest increase in voters, adding 1,394 electors, whereas West Tuipui experienced the most significant drop, losing 1,800 voters from its draft roll.
Aizawl North-II reported the highest sex ratio, with 1,221 female electors for every 1,000 male electors, while West Tuipui had the lowest at 848 females per 1,000 males.
Gupta mentioned that the final roll was initially set to be published on September 6 but was released on Monday due to the original date falling on a Sunday.
She commended the SIR exercise as one of the most efficient in the nation, expressing gratitude to political parties, civil organizations, churches, community leaders, and the media for their support throughout the three-month process.
The SIR initiative commenced on May 20 across all districts, along with 15 other states and two Union Territories as part of the nationwide revision effort.
