Mizoram's Ongoing Battle Against Drug Trafficking: Over 930 Arrests This Year

Significant Drug Seizures and Arrests in Mizoram

Aizawl, Sept 30: Between January and August of this year, security forces, including the Mizoram Police, confiscated drugs valued at over Rs 846 crore, which included highly addictive methamphetamine tablets and heroin. A total of 930 individuals were apprehended for drug-related offenses, as reported by a senior official from the Home Department.

Out of those arrested, 111 were foreign nationals, primarily from Myanmar. The official noted that 635 cases were filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, during the same period.

Tragically, drug consumption has led to the deaths of 45 individuals, including seven women, in Mizoram up to August this year. In the previous year, 118 people, with 18 women among them, lost their lives due to drug use.

The state government, along with security agencies, has ramped up efforts to combat drug trafficking and consumption, especially along the border with Myanmar.

During a drug-awareness campaign in Aizawl, Mizoram's Home Minister K Sapdanga reaffirmed the state's commitment to safeguarding its citizens from the drug crisis. He referred to Mizoram as a 'gateway of drugs' and emphasized the detrimental effects of drug abuse on the youth, calling for a united response from law enforcement, NGOs, and religious organizations.

Sapdanga urged all parties involved to enhance their efforts in executing the State Action Plan, which was officially launched by Mizoram's Governor General (Retd) Dr. Vijay Kumar Singh on Monday.

He encouraged the youth to pledge against drug use, while also advising parents to be vigilant regarding their children's activities. Additionally, he called on NGOs, churches, and community leaders to collaborate in the fight against drugs.

Mizoram and Manipur have become significant drug-trafficking routes in Northeast India, attributed to their extensive, unguarded borders with Myanmar and their proximity to the Golden Triangle, a notorious region for illicit narcotics production.

The international border between Mizoram and Myanmar spans approximately 910 km, with six districts in Mizoram and five in Manipur sharing this boundary.
