Mizoram Railway Expansion: New Corridor to Enhance Connectivity
Mizoram's Railway Network Expansion
The railway line will pass through Aizawl, Serchhip, Hnahthial, Lunglei, Lawngtlai and Siaha districts, extending rail connectivity well beyond Sairang into southern Mizoram
Aizawl, Oct 28: The railway infrastructure in Mizoram is set for a significant upgrade, with plans to extend the network from Sairang to Hmawngbuchhuah in Lawngtlai district. This new 230.11-km railway corridor will traverse six districts, enhancing connectivity in the region.
A meeting held at the Chief Minister's office on Tuesday brought together Chief Minister Lalduhoma and senior officials from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). During this meeting, railway representatives presented details regarding the proposed route and the necessary infrastructure for the project.
The railway line is designed to pass through key areas including Aizawl, Serchhip, Hnahthial, Lunglei, Lawngtlai, and Siaha districts, significantly extending rail access into southern Mizoram. The initiative includes the establishment of 20 railway stations, with the existing station at Sairang being part of the plan, and aims for train speeds of up to 130 km/h.
Given the challenging hilly landscape of Mizoram, the proposed corridor will necessitate the construction of 143 tunnels, totaling approximately 135 km in length. This ambitious project highlights the engineering complexities involved in expanding the railway network across the state.
During the discussions, Lalduhoma expressed gratitude to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for considering Mizoram's railway development proposals. He emphasized the importance of tailoring the railway line to meet public needs effectively.
The Chief Minister also requested that railway authorities ensure the accurate naming of villages and localities for stations along the route, advocating for names that resonate with the local communities.
The meeting was attended by Anjani Kumar Maurya, Chief Administrative Officer of Indian Railways, along with other senior railway officials. Lalduhoma was joined by Clement Lalhmingthanga, MLA; Sudir Kumar, Principal Secretary of the General Administration Department; Vanlaldina Fanai, Commissioner and Secretary to the Chief Minister; and Aizawl Deputy Commissioner Lalhriatpuia.
