Mizoram Expands Muga Silk Production by Supplying Silkworm Seeds to Assam and Meghalaya

Mizoram has commenced the supply of muga silkworm seeds to Assam and Meghalaya, aiming to strengthen its position in muga silk production. With the dispatch of around 27,000 silkworms, officials highlight the state's favorable climate for rearing these silkworms, especially during summer. Aizawl, Sep 30: Mizoram has initiated the supply of muga silkworm seeds to Assam and Meghalaya, marking a significant advancement in the state's commitment to enhancing its muga silk production capabilities, as reported by officials on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Sericulture Director Lalrinawma oversaw the dispatch of approximately 27,000 muga silkworms to Narayanpur in Assam and Rompara in Meghalaya, where these seeds will be further cultivated.

Officials noted that rearing muga silkworms can be challenging during the summer months in the hotter plains, whereas Mizoram's climate is conducive to successful rearing during this period.

Given the high demand for muga silkworm seeds in the plains, the Mizoram office of the Central Silk Board has been actively producing seeds and distributing a portion to Assam and Meghalaya.

The Central Silk Board operates muga silkworm seed production units at 14 sites across the northeastern region, with Mizoram establishing its first unit this year.

The P3 Muga unit located in Thenzawl, Serchhip district, became operational this year, thanks to the efforts of Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Sericulture Minister Lalthansanga. This facility successfully reared muga silkworms in August, according to officials.

This unit is anticipated to support muga silkworm rearers in Mizoram and enhance the state's contribution to muga silk production.

This development follows the Centre's recent plans to establish Mizoram as a key player in muga silk production.

During a visit in May, Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh emphasized ongoing efforts to position Mizoram as a national leader in muga silk production.

He also pointed out the state's favorable conditions for sericulture and suggested implementing cluster-based muga farming in four districts: Lunglei, Champhai, Saitual, and Siaha.

Mizoram stands out as the only northeastern state capable of producing all four major silk varieties: muga, eri, mulberry, and tasar.
