Mizoram Asserts 1875 Boundary Notification in Assam Dispute

The Mizoram government has reiterated its long-standing position on the interstate boundary dispute with Assam, asserting that the 1875 boundary notification is the only valid demarcation. Home Minister K Sapdanga highlighted the unanimous support from political parties and civil society in Mizoram. Despite differing views, the state has engaged in multiple discussions with Assam and the Central government to resolve the issue amicably. This stance has remained unchanged since Mizoram's status as a district council under Assam in the late 1950s. The recent Cabinet meeting reaffirmed this original position, emphasizing the importance of the historical boundary.

Mizoram's Stance on Boundary Dispute

Aizawl, Feb 27: The government of Mizoram has once again emphasized its position regarding the interstate boundary conflict with Assam, asserting that the boundary notification from 1875 is the sole acceptable demarcation between the two states.

During an Assembly session, Mizoram's Home Minister K Sapdanga stated that this stance is supported unanimously by all political factions and major civil society groups within the state, a position that has remained unchanged since 1958-59 when Mizoram was a district council under Assam.

He pointed out that the Assam government continues to reference the 'Inner Line' of the Lushai Hills district, which is based on a notification from March 1933.

Sapdanga mentioned that Mizoram's viewpoint has been consistently presented in various high-level discussions aimed at resolving the long-standing border issue.

He added, 'Given the differing perspectives of Mizoram and Assam, our government has initiated several efforts and reached out to the Central government multiple times. Both states have engaged in discussions at various levels to find an amicable resolution.' This was part of a written response to a query from opposition Congress member C Ngunlianchunga.

The Home Minister also clarified that the State Cabinet meeting on July 8, 2019, did not establish any new position but rather reaffirmed Mizoram's original stance regarding the Cachar Inner Line of 1875.
