Overview of Election Results

In the recent assembly elections held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry, Congress and its allies experienced a mix of results, with notable success among Muslim candidates. While the party managed to break a decade-long drought in Kerala, it faced setbacks in Tamil Nadu, Assam, and West Bengal.

Success of Muslim Candidates

In Kerala, out of the 35 Muslim legislators elected, 30 belong to the United Democratic Front (UDF), which includes eight from Congress and 22 from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). In Assam, 18 out of the 20 Muslim candidates fielded by Congress emerged victorious, contrasting sharply with the low success rate of its non-Muslim candidates.

Challenges in Assam

The Raijor Dal, an ally of Congress, secured two seats, one of which was won by a Muslim candidate, while the other was claimed by Akhil Gogoi, who is under investigation by the NIA for alleged Maoist activities. Conversely, only one of the 79 non-Muslim candidates put forth by Congress won, despite the party announcing candidates for 101 seats in Assam.

Reactions from Political Leaders

Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, president of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), stated that Congress has effectively ended in Assam and has transformed into a Muslim League. He expressed disappointment, noting that those who dig a pit for others often fall into it themselves.

Key Victories in Assam

In Gauripur, Congress candidate Abdul Sobhan Ali defeated AIUDF's Nijanur Rahman by a margin of 19,097 votes. Similarly, in Jaleshwar, Congress's Aftab Mollah won against AIUDF leader Sheikh Alam by 109,688 votes. Congress also performed well in Samaguri, where Tanzil Hussain triumphed over BJP's Anil Saikia by 108,310 votes.

Performance in Other States

In West Bengal, Congress secured two seats, both of which have a significant Muslim population. The party fielded more Muslim candidates compared to the Trinamool Congress. In Tamil Nadu, Congress nominated two Muslim candidates, with one emerging victorious.

Overall Success Rate

Overall, the success rate of Muslim candidates fielded by Congress and its coalition in states like Kerala and Assam was notably high, exceeding 80% in some instances. A significant example is the IUML's Fatima Thahiliya, who won by over 5,000 votes in the Kozhikode Perambra constituency, becoming the first Muslim woman legislator from her party after defeating CPI(M) leader T.P. Ramakrishnan.
