Mithali Raj's Vision for Team India

Mithali Raj, the former captain of the Indian women's cricket team, has shared her thoughts on what Team India needs to achieve in order to secure their first ICC Women's Cricket World Cup title later this year, according to the ICC's official platform.

As the tournament approaches, India enters as one of the favorites, especially since it will be hosted on their home turf. However, formidable opponents like Australia, who have won the championship seven times, and England, with four titles, pose significant challenges as India aims for their inaugural World Cup victory.

‘Capitalize on Key Moments’

Raj emphasizes the importance of capitalizing on critical moments throughout the tournament, which kicks off on September 30. She believes that to emerge victorious, the team must excel in the finer details during crucial matches.

"India needs to capitalize on those small moments during significant games," Raj stated in a recent interview with ICC Digital.

"That’s where the balance lies among the teams in contention. They tend to leverage those moments to shift momentum in their favor, and India must do the same," she added. Raj has previously led India to two World Cup finals in 2005 and 2017, but the team fell short on both occasions, leaving the coveted title just out of reach.

The Impact of a World Cup Victory

Raj believes that winning the World Cup would have a profound effect on women's cricket in India if they manage to lift the trophy on November 2.

"It would be monumental," Raj remarked. "Every player who aspires to represent the country dreams of winning the World Cup, especially since India has yet to achieve this milestone."

"We have come close twice, but the trophy has eluded us," she continued. "Winning the World Cup at home would be a unique experience, providing everyone the chance to witness such a momentous occasion."

Raj Highlights a Rising Star

As the tournament approaches, while established players like Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, and Smriti Mandhana are expected to be in the spotlight, Raj believes the performance of emerging talents will be crucial for India's success.

She specifically mentioned Kranti Goud, a young seamer, as a player to watch during the World Cup, despite her limited experience of just four ODIs.

"I was really impressed with Kranti Goud's raw talent during her time in England," Raj noted. "Although she has played in the Women's Premier League, her experience is still developing."

"However, her determination as a seamer and her ability to take wickets are commendable. She even achieved a six-wicket haul in England, so I am eager to see her perform in the World Cup at home," she concluded.
