Mitchell Starc Critiques ICC Over DRS Technology in Ashes Series
Starc Questions ICC's DRS Payment
Mitchell Starc, the Australian left-arm fast bowler, has raised concerns regarding the International Cricket Council's (ICC) failure to fund the Decision Review System (DRS) technology used in international cricket. He advocates for a unified DRS provider to ensure uniformity in umpire decisions.
Controversy Surrounding the Ashes DRS
Starc's remarks follow the ongoing DRS issues in the Ashes series, where both Australia and England have voiced their dissatisfaction with several calls involving Real Time Snicko (RTS). Tensions escalated during the recent Adelaide Test.
In Australia's first innings, an England review was reinstated by the ICC after the Snicko technology provider acknowledged an operator error that resulted in the loss of wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey during his century. Additionally, during the third Test, Starc was caught on the stump mic expressing his frustration, stating, 'Snicko needs to be sacked.'
Lobbying for DRS Review
Following the incident, the England and Wales Cricket Board, along with Cricket Australia, intends to urge the ICC to reassess its protocols and systems. This error has led to discussions about the host broadcasters covering the costs for the technology.
Starc Advocates for Centralized DRS
Starc emphasized the need for a centralized approach to DRS. He expressed, 'I'm sure it's frustrating for everyone—viewers, officials, and broadcasters. The officials utilize it, so why doesn't the ICC fund it? Why not have a single provider across all series to minimize confusion and frustration?'
Cummins Comments on DRS Variability
Australian captain Pat Cummins also weighed in on the DRS debate, noting discrepancies between RTS and UltraEdge. He remarked, 'The one here seems a little different from what you get overseas. There are always murmurs, and you hope it aligns if you're the bowling team. It doesn't always feel consistent, but you have to proceed based on the umpire's call.'
