Mirabai Chanu's family celebrated her remarkable achievement after she secured the gold medal in the women's 48kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Her mother, Saikhom Tombi, expressed immense pride, stating she had faith in her daughter's victory despite concerns regarding her injury.

In an interview, Tombi shared that Chanu sought her blessings before the competition. "I was sure she would win, and she did. This is the third time I have felt such joy. Just before the competition, she called me for my blessings. At 17:00, she called again to tell me she had won her third competition," she recounted.

Although Tombi had some doubts due to Chanu's injury, her excitement was palpable after the win. "I prayed for her success and was uncertain about her chances because of her injury. However, I was thrilled when she emerged victorious. This is her third win, and I couldn't be happier," she added.

Chanu's Uncle Commends Her Resolve

Vinod Kumar Meetei, Chanu's uncle, also shared his confidence in her ability to clinch the gold medal, praising her unwavering determination. "It feels amazing; I always believed she would win. It's not just my faith—everyone who supports India knows she never gives up. This gold medal is for everyone," he remarked.

"I was certain she would win the gold medal. While the final outcome is in the hands of the Almighty, I was confident—given her strength and determination—that she would achieve this victory," he added.

Chanu's Historic Achievement

Chanu achieved her third Commonwealth Games gold medal by lifting 105 kg in the clean and jerk category during the women's 48 kg final at Glasgow 2026, marking India's first gold medal of the Games. She had previously won gold at the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Earlier in the competition, Chanu set a Commonwealth record with an 85 kg lift in the snatch. She began the clean and jerk section with an unsuccessful attempt at 82 kg but later succeeded in lifting 82 kg on her second try. She then set a new Games and Commonwealth record with an impressive 85 kg lift on her third attempt.

Chanu's successful lift of 105 kg secured her gold medal and completed her hat-trick of Commonwealth Games golds.
