Mirabai Chanu's Historic Win
Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu expressed her joy after clinching her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, showcasing an impressive performance in the women's 48kg weightlifting category during the Glasgow 2026 event. This victory marked India's first gold medal of the Games.
Chanu's triumph followed compatriot Rishikanta Singh's silver medal achievement in the men's 60 kg event on the same day. With this latest win, Chanu adds to her previous gold medals from the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games.
A Special Achievement
In a heartfelt message shared on X, Mirabai Chanu expressed her happiness over winning her third Commonwealth Games gold medal, emphasizing the significance of this accomplishment during her fourth appearance at the Games. She extended her gratitude to her supporters, stating, "I am thrilled with my performance and feel truly honored to win my third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal at Glasgow. This achievement is even more special as it is my fourth CWG appearance. Thank you all for your unwavering support. Jai Hind."
Record-Setting Performance
Chanu, who previously set a Commonwealth record with an 85 kg lift in the snatch, began the clean and jerk segment with an initial unsuccessful attempt at 82 kg. However, she bounced back with a successful lift of 82 kg on her second try, followed by an impressive 85 kg lift on her third attempt, establishing a new Games and Commonwealth record.
She then attempted to lift 105 kg, successfully raising it above her head, which secured her gold medal and completed her hat-trick of Commonwealth Games golds.
Rishikanta Singh's Silver Medal
Chanu's gold medal was India's third medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games and the first gold. Earlier, Chanambam Rishikanta Singh earned India's first silver medal, following para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar's bronze. Rishikanta achieved a total lift of 264 kg (121 kg snatch + 143 kg clean and jerk) in the men's 60kg weightlifting event, setting a new Commonwealth Games snatch record with his 121 kg lift. However, Malaysia's Mohamad Aniq Kasdan matched this mark and went on to achieve a Games-record total of 273 kg to win gold. Kenya's Joshua Mboya secured the bronze with a total lift of 260 kg.
Rishikanta's final clean and jerk attempt at 151 kg was unsuccessful, concluding his pursuit for the gold medal.
