Mirabai Chanu Shines with Third Gold at Commonwealth Games 2026
Celebrating Mirabai Chanu's Achievement
The President of the Indian Olympic Association, PT Usha, praised Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu for her remarkable achievement of winning her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Chanu's victory in the women's 48kg weightlifting category at Glasgow 2026 marked India's first gold medal of the event.
Chanu's gold medal came shortly after her fellow athlete, Rishikanta Singh, earned a silver in the men's 60kg category during the same Games. In an interview in Glasgow, PT Usha expressed her joy over Chanu's success, calling it a moment of pride for the entire nation. She highlighted Chanu's confidence and outstanding performance, noting that her victory brought great happiness to all Indians.
"I am thrilled to see Mirabai Chanu lifting weights, and it is a significant moment for me and all Indians that she has won the Commonwealth Gold. Her confidence was evident, and I am overjoyed; this is a proud moment for our country," Usha stated.
Chanu's Record-Setting Performance
Mirabai Chanu, who previously set a Commonwealth record with an 85 kg lift in the snatch, began the clean and jerk segment with an initial unsuccessful attempt at 82 kg. However, she bounced back on her second try, successfully lifting 82 kg, and then achieved another impressive lift of 85 kg on her third attempt, establishing a new Games and Commonwealth record.
Chanu then aimed for a 105 kg lift, which she successfully executed, securing the gold medal and completing a remarkable hat-trick of Commonwealth Games golds. This latest victory adds to her previous gold medals from the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games, marking a significant milestone for Indian weightlifting.
