In New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his admiration for Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu after she clinched her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Chanu's remarkable performance in the women's 48kg weightlifting category at the Glasgow 2026 Games marked India's first gold medal of the event. This achievement followed Rishikanta Singh's silver medal in the men's 60kg category earlier on the same day.

Chanu's Record-Setting Performance

Chanu, who previously set a Commonwealth record with an 85 kg lift in the snatch, began the clean and jerk segment with an initial unsuccessful attempt at 82 kg. However, she bounced back with a successful lift of 82 kg on her second try and then achieved an impressive 85 kg lift on her third attempt, establishing a new Games and Commonwealth record. She later attempted a lift of 105 kg, which she successfully executed, securing her gold medal and completing a hat-trick of Commonwealth Games golds. This victory adds to her previous gold medals from the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games.
