Mirabai Chanu Shines Again as India Dominates Day 4 at Commonwealth Games 2026

Chanu's Historic Gold Medal Win

On Day 4 of the Commonwealth Games 2026, Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu spearheaded India's efforts by securing her third consecutive gold medal in weightlifting. Competing in the women's 48kg category, Chanu's impressive performance marked her as the first Indian to achieve this remarkable feat, following her victories at the Gold Coast in 2018 and Birmingham in 2022. This win also marked India's inaugural gold medal at the Glasgow Games.


Weightlifting Success Continues

India's weightlifting team continued to excel, with Chanambam Rishikanta Singh earning a silver medal in the men's 60kg division, while Raja Muthupandi also secured silver in the men's 65kg event. Together, they contributed to India's total of three medals from weightlifting on this day. Rishikanta achieved a combined lift of 264kg (121kg in snatch and 143kg in clean and jerk), while Raja lifted a total of 286kg, comprising 126kg in snatch and 160kg in clean and jerk.


Boxing Highlights

In boxing, India had a fruitful day as Preeti Pawar advanced to the women's 54kg quarterfinals after defeating Malawi's Deborah Mtenje by Referee Stopped Contest (RSC). Jadumani Singh also progressed in the men's 55kg category with a decisive 5-0 victory over Pakistan's Sumama Rehman. However, Aditya Pratap Yadav faced a setback, losing narrowly 3-2 to Uganda's Nuhu Batte in the men's 65kg Round of 16, marking India's first boxing defeat of the Games.


Mixed Results in Other Sports

In swimming, the team of Srihari Nataraj, Aryan Nehra, Aneesh Gowda, and Dhakshan Shashikumar qualified for the men's 4x200m freestyle relay final after finishing third in the heats, ultimately placing sixth in the final race.


The bowls team faced disappointment as Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey were eliminated from the women's pairs competition after a close tie-break loss to Namibia, followed by a defeat against England. Additionally, Putul Sonowal exited the men's singles after losing to Malta's Shaun James Parnis.


In artistic gymnastics, Tapan Mohanty finished 15th in the men's all-around final, while the Indian women's 3x3 wheelchair basketball team lost 21-4 to the host nation, Scotland, in their Pool B match.


India's Medal Count

With one gold and two silver medals, India concluded another dynamic day in Glasgow, building momentum as athletics events approach. After Day 4, India stands eighth in the medal tally, with a total of two silvers, one gold, and a bronze. Australia leads with 39 medals, including 17 gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze.
