Mirabai Chanu Aims for Asian Games After Historic CWG Gold
Indian weightlifting sensation Mirabai Chanu, fresh off her remarkable achievement of securing a third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, is now focused on the upcoming Asian Games in Japan. She has commenced her training, aiming to capture the one significant medal that has eluded her thus far.
After returning to India on Sunday from her successful stint at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, Mirabai expressed her complete dedication to the continental competition, where she aspires to surpass her fourth-place finish in the women's 49kg category at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
Record-Breaking Performance
"The Asian Games are just around the corner, and I have limited time to prepare. This competition will be incredibly challenging for me. My training has already begun, and I am fully committed to winning another medal for India," Mirabai stated. The Olympic silver medalist showcased her exceptional skills in Glasgow, lifting 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, achieving a total of 190kg, which set a new Games record. This victory also made her the first Indian woman to earn medals at four consecutive Commonwealth Games, having previously won silver in Glasgow 2014 and gold in Gold Coast 2018, Birmingham 2022, and now Glasgow 2026.
An Emotional Journey of Sacrifice and Joy
Mirabai reflected on her inspiring journey from a young weightlifter in Manipur to becoming one of India's most celebrated sports figures. "Winning a medal brings both joy and reflection. I think about the challenges I faced and how far I've come. The hardships fade away in the joy of victory. This medal represents the struggles I endured for India," she shared.
Tears of Joy on the Podium
The emotional weight of standing on the podium again was profound for the champion. "As I stood there, memories flooded back from the past four years. Seeing our flag rise and hearing our national anthem brought tears of joy," she expressed.
Gratitude for Support System
Mirabai expressed her heartfelt thanks to her fans for their unwavering support throughout her career. "Their love has shaped my journey. My sole aim was to win a medal for India, and I am grateful for the affection I have received," she noted.
Praise for Coach Vijay Sharma
The 31-year-old athlete acknowledged her chief national coach and mentor, Vijay Sharma, for his crucial role in her success. "I am fortunate to have a coach like Vijay sir, who has been a constant source of support and motivation. He guides me through wins and losses, helping me strategize for the future," Mirabai stated. Sharma, a Dronacharya Awardee, commended Mirabai's discipline and consistency, emphasizing her unique achievement of winning medals in four consecutive Commonwealth Games.
Thankful for PM Modi's Motivation
Mirabai also expressed her gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his congratulatory message on social media following her latest victory. "His encouragement inspires every athlete. It feels like we have a Prime Minister who genuinely cares for us, and that motivates us to perform for our country," she remarked.
Chasing a 'Childhood Dream'
Recently, Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav urged the Sports Ministry to consider Mirabai for an honor following her historic achievement. Although she has received the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and Padma Shri awards, she dreams of winning the Arjuna Award. "If the government recognizes my achievements with this award, I would be thrilled," she said. To qualify for the Arjuna Award, athletes must demonstrate consistent outstanding performance and maintain a clean disciplinary record.
Warm Welcome Home
Upon her return to New Delhi, Mirabai received a warm welcome from fans and members of the Delhi Meetei Coordinating Committee, celebrating yet another milestone in her illustrious career as one of India's top weightlifters.
