Mirabai Chanu Achieves Historic Gold Medal

President Droupadi Murmu has extended her congratulations to Olympic champion Mirabai Chanu for winning India's inaugural gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in the women's 48 kg weightlifting category. The President commended Chanu's resilience, determination, and excellence.

In a message shared by Rashtrapati Bhavan on X, President Murmu expressed her heartfelt congratulations: "Heartiest congratulations to Mirabai Chanu on winning India's first Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in the women's 48 kg weightlifting event. With consecutive Gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, she has showcased exceptional grit, determination, and excellence. Her remarkable achievement inspires young sportspersons across the country. I wish her continued success in future endeavors."

Mirabai Chanu achieved her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women's 48kg weightlifting event held in Glasgow, marking India's first gold of CWG 2026. She successfully lifted 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, completing her hat-trick of golds, having previously won in 2018 and 2022.

President Honors Other Medal Winners

President Murmu also recognized Rishikanta Singh Chanambam for securing a silver medal in the men's 60kg weightlifting event and Jhandu Kumar for winning a bronze medal in the men's heavyweight para powerlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

In another post on X, the President praised the athletes for their remarkable performances and determination: "Heartiest congratulations to Rishikanta Singh Chanambam on winning Silver Medal in the Men's 60kg Weightlifting event and to Jhandu Kumar on clinching Bronze Medal in the Men's Heavyweight Para Powerlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Rishikanta's Silver Medal Achievement

Rishikanta secured the silver medal in the men's 60kg event with a total lift of 264kg, which included 121kg in the snatch and 143kg in the clean and jerk. He set a new Commonwealth Games snatch record with his lift of 121kg. However, Malaysia's Mohamad Aniq Kasdan claimed gold with a Games record total of 273kg, while Kenya's Joshua Mboya took home the bronze with a total of 260kg.
