Chanu's Joyful Victory

Olympic champion Mirabai Chanu expressed her happiness after clinching her third gold medal in the women's 48kg weightlifting category at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. She stated that she felt "extremely happy" to contribute another gold to India's achievements.


Feeling the Pressure

In a post-victory interview, Chanu shared her excitement about securing the third gold for India, acknowledging the pressure she felt to excel. "I am thrilled to have brought home the third gold medal for India. There were many thoughts in my mind, and I felt a bit of pressure. I aimed to perform exceptionally well for the Indian weightlifting team. I am overjoyed with my third gold medal and the fourth medal overall in the Commonwealth Games," she remarked.


Achieving a Gold Medal Hat-Trick

Chanu previously won gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and 2022. With her latest victory, she has achieved a remarkable hat-trick of gold medals at the Games and has secured India's first gold medal at Glasgow 2026.


Setting New Records

Earlier in the competition, Chanu established a Commonwealth record with an impressive 85 kg lift in the snatch. She began the clean and jerk segment with an initial unsuccessful attempt at 82 kg but returned to successfully lift it on her second try. In her third attempt, she lifted 85 kg, setting a new Games and Commonwealth record.


Chanu then aimed for a 105 kg lift, which she successfully executed, securing the gold medal and completing her hat-trick of Commonwealth Games golds. This victory adds to her previous successes in 2018 and 2022, marking India's first gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Games.
