Mikel Merino Celebrates Quarterfinal Goal Amid San Fermin Festivities
Merino's Celebratory Moment
Mikel Merino, the Spanish and Arsenal midfielder, recently celebrated his pivotal goal that secured Spain's place in the quarterfinals against Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo. In a jubilant moment captured in the locker room, Merino expressed his belief that the traditional 'San Fermin' festivities bring him good fortune, highlighting his knack for scoring critical goals.
The FIFA World Cup match between Portugal and Spain featured a fascinating generational clash, showcasing 18-year-old Lamime Yamal against the 41-year-old Ronaldo. Despite numerous opportunities, both teams struggled to convert chances, with impressive defensive plays on display. Ultimately, it was Merino's decisive strike in the 91st minute that eliminated Portugal and marked the end of Ronaldo's World Cup journey without a title.
'San Fermin Brings Me Luck'
In a video shared on Spain Football's official Instagram account, Merino spoke about the 'San Fermin' festival, celebrated from July 6 to 14 in honor of Saint Fermin, the first bishop of Pamplona. Known for its vibrant street parties, music, and the iconic 'Running of the Bulls,' Merino believes this festival enhances his luck.
He remarked, "Last minute... it is crazy! Truly, I do not know. San Fermin protects me or something, but every time it is the 6th or near the festivities, I have that luck. Very happy."
'Specialized in Scoring Key Goals'
When asked about his ability to score crucial goals, Merino responded, "It seems so. It is what happens when you're prepared, eager to help, and given the opportunity. I scored, but it was also thanks to the excellent work of all my teammates."
