Meghalaya's Road Development Achievements Highlighted by Chief Minister

In a recent announcement, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma revealed that the state has constructed an average of nearly one kilometre of road daily over the past eight years. This achievement, which totals over 3,200 kilometres, is part of a broader initiative to enhance connectivity, particularly in underdeveloped regions. The government has committed substantial investments to bridge infrastructure gaps and promote balanced development across the state. Sangma emphasized that these road projects are vital for connecting communities and fostering economic growth, tourism, and education. With increased funding for road development, Meghalaya aims to ensure that no district is left behind in its growth story.

Shillong, Aug 18: On Monday, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma revealed that the Meghalaya government has achieved an impressive average of nearly one kilometre of road construction per day over the last eight years. He noted that more than 3,200 kilometres of roads have been built throughout the state during this period.

While inaugurating the foundation stone for the Rs 140 crore Weiloi–Mawkyrwat–Rangthong road upgrade project in South West Khasi Hills, Sangma emphasized the significant improvement in connectivity.

Since 2018, projects exceeding Rs 850 crore have been executed in South West Khasi Hills, with total commitments now approaching Rs 990 crore.

He highlighted that underdeveloped regions, including South West Khasi Hills, South Garo Hills, and East Jaintia Hills, are receiving focused attention to bridge the infrastructure gap and ensure balanced development across Meghalaya.

Sangma reiterated the importance of including the most remote districts in Meghalaya’s growth narrative. “No area, no district should be left behind. Development must begin from the most remote corners and reach every village,” he asserted.

He explained that investments in road development are not merely projects; they serve to connect people, multiple villages, and economic centers, while also reducing travel time and transport costs, thereby improving access to essential services.

This fiscal year, the Meghalaya government has increased its capital outlay by 6% compared to the revised estimates for 2025–26. The government has allocated nearly Rs 2000 crore for road development and an additional Rs 500 crore for maintenance.

“The road will open up opportunities in tourism, agriculture, trade, and education. Connectivity is the foundation upon which development processes start,” he emphasized.
