Shillong, May 30: The election for Meghalaya's sole Rajya Sabha seat is set for June 18, with vote counting occurring on the same day. The current MP, WR Kharlukhi, representing the National People’s Party (NPP), will see his term conclude on June 19. This election coincides with polls in nine other states for a total of 24 Rajya Sabha seats nationwide.

According to BDR Tiwari, the Chief Electoral Officer of the state, voting will take place from 9 AM to 4 PM on June 18, followed by vote counting at 5 PM.

Tiwari announced that the election notification will be released on June 1, with the deadline for nomination submissions set for June 8. The scrutiny of nomination papers is scheduled for June 9, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until June 11.

In a prior meeting with political party representatives, Tiwari highlighted the importance of disclosing candidates' criminal backgrounds, adhering to Supreme Court directives and guidelines from the Election Commission of India.

It appears that the NPP is poised to maintain its hold on the seat, given its strong majority in the current Assembly. James Sangma, the brother of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, is expected to be the party's nominee for this position.
