Meghalaya Woman Surrenders After Supreme Court Cancels Bail in Husband's Murder Case

Surrender of Sonam Raghuwanshi

Shillong, July 29 - Sonam Raghuwanshi, accused of murdering her husband Raja Raghuwanshi during their honeymoon, surrendered to a subordinate court in Meghalaya on Tuesday, complying with the Supreme Court's directive. The apex court had revoked her bail and ordered her to turn herself in.

According to Vivek Siem, the Superintendent of Police for East Khasi Hills district, Sonam, who hails from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, was placed in judicial custody on the same day.

On July 23, the Supreme Court annulled the bail granted to Sonam and instructed her to surrender within three weeks. She was arrested last June in connection with the murder of her businessman husband, Raja Raghuwanshi. The couple had gone missing on May 23, 2025, while on their honeymoon in the Sohra region of Meghalaya.

Raja's body was discovered in a deep gorge on June 2, 2025. Authorities allege that Sonam conspired with her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, and hired assassins to carry out the murder during their honeymoon. The Meghalaya High Court had previously upheld the subordinate court's order granting bail to Sonam on June 29.
