Meghalaya Police Uncover Identity of Key Suspect in Murder Case

In a significant development, Meghalaya Police have identified Raj Singh Kushwaha as the individual using the alias 'Sanjay Verma' in connection with the murder case of Raja Raghuvanshi. The investigation reveals extensive communication between Kushwaha and Sonam Raghuvanshi prior to her marriage. With a Special Investigation Team currently in Madhya Pradesh, authorities are delving deeper into the case, which involves multiple suspects. Sonam's brother is also set to be questioned as the investigation unfolds, raising further questions about the circumstances surrounding the murder.

Identity Revealed in Ongoing Investigation

Shillong, June 19: Authorities in Meghalaya have confirmed that the individual known as 'Sanjay Verma' is actually Raj Singh Kushwaha, who adopted a false identity to maintain contact with Sonam Raghuvanshi.

Both Raj and Sonam are identified as the primary suspects in the murder case involving Raja Raghuvanshi, along with three additional accomplices.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, stated, 'It has been verified that Sanjay Verma is indeed Raj Singh Kushwaha, who has been using this alias.'

Investigators revealed that Sonam was frequently communicating with her partner Raj, with extensive conversations occurring in the lead-up to her marriage to Raja on May 11.

Call Detail Records (CDRs) from Sonam’s phone number 97701-17734 indicate that she was in regular contact with Raj, who was using the alias Sanjay Verma on his number 78793-76225.

The majority of these calls took place between March and April 2025, with Sonam contacting Sanjay Verma 234 times over a span of 21 days during that timeframe. A Special Investigation Team from Meghalaya is currently in Madhya Pradesh to further investigate the matter.

Additionally, Sonam’s brother, Govind Raghuvanshi, is expected to be brought to Shillong for questioning. On Tuesday, members of the SIT also interrogated Raja’s family and documented their statements.

As Sonam had previously surrendered in Ghazipur, the investigation team will also be questioning various individuals in that region.
