Meghalaya Police Chief Warns Youth Against Joining Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council
Caution Against Joining HNLC
Shillong, March 1: The Director General of Police for Meghalaya, Idashisha Nongrang, has advised young individuals to reconsider their decision before aligning with the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC). She emphasized that the actual experiences within the group starkly contrast with the promises made to new members.
During a discussion about recent surrenders, Nongrang highlighted that many youths who initially joined the HNLC soon discovered that the realities did not align with the assurances they received.
“Young people should critically evaluate the promises made to them and reflect on the reasons behind the recent surrenders. This should prompt them to question the discrepancies between what is promised and the actual situation,” the DGP remarked.
She noted that last year, four members of the HNLC surrendered shortly after realizing their disillusionment with the group.
Nongrang mentioned that investigations are ongoing into various aspects related to the HNLC, particularly concerning individuals of interest in coal mining regions.
She pointed out that these coal mining areas contain dynamite and other explosive materials, some of which are reportedly being sold on the black market.
On Wednesday, a member of the HNLC surrendered to the police, and the DGP disclosed that several videos showcasing the creation of explosives were discovered on the surrendered individual's phone.
Authorities suspect that there is at least one skilled individual within the HNLC capable of constructing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) using locally sourced materials.
In a related development, the Meghalaya Police have decided to distribute their K9 unit throughout the state to enhance operational efficiency.
Currently, K9 units are stationed in Shillong and Goeragre in West Garo Hills.
Nongrang explained that the division will comprise a combination of dogs trained to detect explosives and narcotics, as well as those adept at tracking.
“This division will ensure that the capabilities and reach of these K9 units are expedited across the entire state,” she added.
