Meghalaya Police Arrest Three Following NGO Member's Murder

In a significant development, Meghalaya Police have arrested three individuals linked to the murder of an NGO member, Dilseng Sangma, which has sparked unrest in the West Garo Hills district. Arrests Made in Connection with NGO Member's Death


On Saturday, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced that the Meghalaya Police have taken three individuals into custody related to the murder of a member from a non-governmental organization. This incident has heightened tensions in the West Garo Hills district, which shares a border with Bangladesh.


The victim, identified as Dilseng Sangma, succumbed to injuries on Friday after a group of unidentified attackers assaulted a team from the ACHIK organization in Goalgaon village, as reported by local media. Another team member sustained serious injuries during the attack.


The ACHIK team was in the area under the Rajabala police station to investigate an alleged illegal stone quarry operation.


The exact motive behind the assault remains unclear. West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T Sangma stated that further details would emerge once the investigation concludes.


In response to the murder, a shutdown was observed in the district and the wider Garo Hills region on Saturday, as reported by local news outlets.


Chief Minister Sangma condemned the act of violence and mentioned that police conducted multiple raids on Friday night, resulting in the arrests. He assured that efforts are ongoing to capture additional suspects.


He urged residents to maintain peace and communal harmony, advising them to critically assess the information circulating on social media.


The deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills is currently engaging with civil society organizations to establish a peace committee aimed at addressing community concerns through dialogue.


Rajabala MLA Mizanur Rahman Kazi expressed on social media that the administration's primary focus is to uphold law and order, noting that the overall situation remains calm and the spirit of brotherhood is intact.
