Megan Schutt's Comeback in ODI Series

Hobart, Feb 25: Australia's leading fast bowler, Megan Schutt, humorously noted that her teammates won't easily get rid of her, expressing her excitement to rejoin the squad after being included in the playing XI for the first ODI against India, following injuries to Ellyse Perry and Kim Garth.

Making a strong comeback after missing the T20I segment of the multi-format series, Schutt wasted no time in showcasing her skills during the opening ODI at Allan Border Field on Tuesday. She struck with her second delivery, setting a commanding tone for the Australian bowlers.

The 33-year-old bowler delivered a classic inswinger that trapped opener Pratika Rawal lbw, reaffirming her status as a formidable threat with the new ball. This performance marked a significant return for Schutt, who had been omitted from the ODI squad but reclaimed her position due to a late injury change.

“I've been joking with them that they can't get rid of me that easily. It's great to be back in the squad and making an impact with the new ball, which is what I was brought in to do,” Schutt shared with reporters at Hobart Airport on Wednesday.

“As an opening bowler, the goal is to take wickets early. In the Powerplay, it’s a risk-reward scenario with only two fielders out, and I was fortunate to get the ball moving and secure an early wicket,” she added.

Schutt concluded her spell with figures of 2-42 from nine overs, a performance that holds historical significance. This achievement elevated her past Lisa Sthalekar, placing her third on Australia's all-time women's ODI wicket-takers list, now only behind Cathryn Fitzpatrick (180 wickets) and Ellyse Perry (166).

Her inclusion in the XI was not guaranteed. Initially excluded from the ODI squad for the India series, Schutt remained part of the larger group but was not selected for the three T20Is, with fellow bowlers Kim Garth and Darcie Brown chosen instead.

When the selectors announced the squads in January, national selector Shawn Flegler clarified that Schutt's omission did not signify the end of her ODI career. It was primarily a tactical decision, aimed at adapting the team for home conditions and providing Brown with more experience in the format. However, an injury to Garth opened the door for Schutt's return.

While acknowledging her disappointment at missing the T20Is, Schutt noted that the reasoning was clearly communicated to her.

“The extra pace from Brown was a key factor against the Indian team. I understand the decision, and while it was disappointing to sit out, it’s part of the job. You have to support your team and stay positive,” she explained.

“I had my moments with the coaching staff when I was informed. But beyond that, you move on; it’s part of the job, and you must seize the opportunity when it arises,” she added.

Australia arrived in Hobart on Wednesday and will practice at Bellerive Oval on Thursday in preparation for the second ODI on Friday. With the multi-format series tied at four points each, Schutt's return could be crucial as the hosts aim to regain momentum.
