Meenakshi Goyat's Controversial Defeat at Asian Games Trials Sparks Outrage

Indian wrestler Meenakshi Goyat's recent performance at the Asian Games 2026 trials has sparked significant controversy. After a dramatic semifinal victory over three-time Olympian Vinesh Phogat, Goyat faced Antim Pangal in the final but narrowly lost, leading to a heated argument with Wrestling Federation officials over officiating decisions. This incident has drawn attention to ongoing issues within the WFI, especially following past controversies. Goyat, who hails from a humble background, is now setting her sights on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Read on for a detailed account of the events that unfolded.

Meenakshi Goyat's Journey to the Finals

During the Asian Games 2026 trials held at Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi on May 30, Indian wrestler Meenakshi Goyat created a stir after her final match against Antim Pangal. Goyat had previously made headlines by defeating three-time Olympian Vinesh Phogat in the semifinals, marking Phogat's return to the mat since the Paris Olympics 2024. Despite her impressive semifinal victory, Meenakshi fell short in the final, losing 2-3 to Pangal, thus missing out on a spot in the Asian Games.

Tensions Rise After the Final Match

Following her defeat, the atmosphere at the stadium became charged as Meenakshi engaged in a heated discussion with officials from the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), including president Sanjay Singh. She expressed her frustration over what she perceived as unfair officiating during the closely contested final. Reports indicate that Meenakshi and her father confronted WFI officials for over ten minutes, disputing the referee's decisions regarding passivity points awarded during the match.

Despite her protests, the result remained unchanged, with Antim Pangal officially declared the winner by a narrow margin of 3-2. The incident quickly gained traction on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where videos of the altercation circulated widely.

WFI's Controversial Decisions

The Wrestling Federation of India has faced scrutiny recently, particularly after it barred Vinesh Phogat from participating in the Asian Games trials due to eligibility issues related to recent domestic tournament performances. However, the Supreme Court intervened, allowing Phogat to compete in the trials held on May 30 and 31, 2026. The WFI has been embroiled in controversies since 2024, especially following allegations of sexual misconduct against its former president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, by female wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik.

She gained recognition at the national level by winning a gold medal at the Sub-Junior National Championship in 2016, followed by success at the junior national level in 2018. In April 2026, she secured a silver medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships, losing to China's Jin Zhang. After her recent trials, Meenakshi is now focused on qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, scheduled for July 14-30, 2028.
