MDMK Ends Alliance with DMK After Nine Years
MDMK Breaks Ties with DMK
The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), led by Vaiko, has decided to sever its alliance with the DMK, headed by MK Stalin, marking the end of a nine-year partnership. This decision was made during a high-level committee meeting held on Saturday. The resolution passed during the meeting stated that any future electoral alliances would be determined closer to election time. Vaiko had previously expressed his dissatisfaction, indicating that he felt the party was treated unfairly within the alliance framework.
Reactions and Future Plans
In recent weeks, Vaiko had hinted multiple times at the possibility of his party exiting the alliance. However, MDMK candidates who contested and won seats in the assembly elections under the alliance have refused to resign, insisting they will remain with the DMK. MLA Senthil Selvam from Sirkaazi boycotted the party meeting and announced his resignation from MDMK, stating he would join the DMK.
Reports indicate that MDMK legislator and Deputy General Secretary TM Rajendran has also declined to leave his seat. Under the DMK alliance, four MDMK candidates contested the assembly elections, with two emerging victorious. The proposal passed by MDMK on Saturday emphasized that the party joined the DMK-led alliance to prevent the rise of communal forces in Tamil Nadu and to uphold the core principles of the Dravidian movement. It was alleged that attempts were made to erase MDMK's distinct identity and disregard its 32-year political legacy in the lead-up to the 2026 assembly elections.
Political Dynamics Ahead of 2026 Elections
The proposal also addressed the political landscape following the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, stating that the political activities that ensued did not align with the public mandate. It accused certain factions of discussing political arrangements behind the scenes that contradicted the spirit of the election results. The party claimed there were efforts to create an alternative power structure by merging ideologically diverse parties, which further fueled unrest within the alliance.
