Mayawati Intensifies Political Efforts Ahead of Bihar Assembly Elections 2025

As the Bahujan Samaj Party faces challenges in Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati is ramping up her political efforts for the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. With plans to field candidates in all constituencies, questions arise about her nephew's potential role and the party's ability to attract the Dalit vote bank. Historically, the BSP has had a fluctuating presence in Bihar, and despite limited options, Mayawati aims to secure a vote share of 3 to 5%. This election could be a pivotal moment for the BSP as it seeks to re-establish its influence.

Mayawati's Renewed Political Strategy

In the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) led by Mayawati is witnessing a decline. In response, Mayawati has ramped up her political activities once again. Concerned about the erosion of the Dalit vote bank, the BSP chief has begun strategizing for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections in 2025. The party has announced its intention to field candidates in all 243 assembly constituencies.

Speculations on Nephew's Role

This raises the question of whether Mayawati is preparing to reintroduce her nephew, Akash Anand, into the political arena in Bihar. Another critical inquiry is whether the BSP, which secured only one seat in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, can attract the Dalit vote bank in Bihar. The BSP's ongoing struggles in Uttar Pradesh highlight Mayawati's ambition to establish herself as a prominent national Dalit leader, making the Bihar elections a significant opportunity.

BSP's Historical Performance in Bihar

The BSP first entered the Bihar electoral scene in 1990 when Bihar and Jharkhand were a single state, with 324 assembly seats available. In that election, the BSP fielded candidates for 164 seats but garnered only 0.7% of the vote share, failing to win any seats. In the 1995 elections, the party contested 161 seats and managed to secure victory in 2, with a vote share of 1.34%.

During the 2000 elections, the BSP participated in 294 constituencies and achieved its largest success by winning 5 seats. In the 2005 elections, the party contested 283 seats and won 2. The October 2005 elections saw the BSP field candidates in 212 constituencies, resulting in 4 victories. However, in the 2010 and 2015 elections, the party received 3.21% and 2.1% of the vote share, respectively, without winning any seats. In the 2020 elections, the BSP contested 80 seats but only managed to win 1 seat with a vote share of 1.5%.

Importance of the Bihar Elections

Despite the challenges, the BSP faces limited options. Following the Bihar Assembly elections, the Uttar Pradesh panchayat elections will take place, followed by the state assembly elections the next year. Ahead of the 2027 assembly elections, the BSP aims to send a strong message to its party workers. Even if the BSP does not secure any seats in Bihar, the goal is to achieve a vote share of 3 to 5%.

Historically, the BSP has shown influence in Bihar's border districts. Areas like Buxar and Gopalganj have previously elected BSP legislators to the Bihar Assembly. Thus, the BSP appears poised to make a significant move, leveraging its Dalit vote bank.
