Matthew Mott has been named the new head coach of the Sydney Sixers for the Big Bash League (BBL), succeeding James Hopes, who recently left to join Queensland. Mott will also resign from his position as the coach of the Sixers' Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) team, with the club set to announce his successor later this week, as reported by a sports news outlet.

Coaching Transition

The former England white-ball coach, who served as an assistant on the Sixers' BBL coaching staff last season, has signed a two-year contract. He is the third head coach for the BBL this year, following Hopes, who took over from Greg Shipperd but left just two months into his tenure.

Coaching Strategy of the Club

Mott was appointed as the WBBL head coach last year, and there were discussions about him managing both the men's and women's teams. However, the Sixers decided to maintain separate coaching roles, given the different timelines of the WBBL and BBL seasons.

"To ensure continuity and stability across both programs, we have appointed distinct head coaches for each team, considering the potential shifts in the BBL and WBBL schedules each season," stated Rachael Haynes, the general manager of Sydney Sixers.

"While we evaluated Matthew's capability to lead both teams, we opted for a long-term strategy to ensure consistent leadership. The strength of the candidate we will announce as the new WBBL head coach gives us confidence that this decision is beneficial for both programs," she added.

Mott's Perspective on His New Role

Matthew Mott expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the men's program, stating, "Having been part of the Sixers family for a long time, I am incredibly excited to take on the BBL Head Coach role."

"This club has a rich history and a winning culture, and I am eager to build upon the strong foundations laid over the years. Having closely worked with the men's program, I recognize the talent and potential within this team," he continued.

"Although I am disappointed not to continue as WBBL Head Coach, I am thankful for my time with the women's program and wish Ash Gardner, the players, and the support staff all the best for WBBL|12," Mott concluded.

Mott's Notable Career Achievements

Under Mott's guidance, Australia achieved a remarkable record of 26 consecutive ODI victories, establishing itself as a leading team in international women's cricket.

Earlier in his coaching career, he was the Head Coach of the New South Wales Blues, leading them to victory in the inaugural Champions League Twenty20 in 2009. He also spent three seasons as Head Coach of Glamorgan County Cricket Club and currently serves as a T20 consultant at Lancashire and Head Coach of the Manchester Super Giants women's team in The Hundred.

In addition to his head coaching roles, Mott has been involved in various elite programs, including Australia's men's team, the Under-19 program, and franchises like Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.

As a player, Mott represented Queensland and Victoria, playing 66 first-class matches and scoring 3,723 runs at an average of 33.84, which includes seven centuries and 20 half-centuries.
