Historic Debut Performance

In a remarkable debut, Matthew Hollard was awarded Player of the Match during his first international appearance, which was against the reigning World Champions, India. The Irish fast bowler achieved impressive bowling figures of 3 wickets for 28 runs, significantly contributing to limiting India to a total of 148 runs after Ireland set a challenging target of 183 runs in Belfast. This victory marks Ireland's first international win over India, giving them a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Key Wickets on Debut

Hollard made an immediate impact by taking his first wicket with just his second delivery, dismissing Ishan Kishan, caught brilliantly by wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker. He followed this by taking the wickets of Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar in his subsequent overs.

A Dream Come True

Reflecting on his debut against India, Hollard expressed, "Honestly, I never anticipated this. I always believed in my abilities, but debuting against India is truly a dream come true. I couldn't have wished for anything better. My family traveled from Johannesburg to support me, and it still feels surreal."

Record-Breaking Achievement

Hollard is now the second Irish player to earn a Player of the Match award on T20I debut, following Andre Botha's performance against Scotland in 2008. His figures of 3/28 are the second-best by an Irish player against India in T20 internationals.

Emotional First Wicket

Describing his feelings after claiming his first wicket, Hollard shared, "It's amusing. After that first ball, I turned to Harry and said, 'The first one's done.' I honestly held my breath until Lorcan caught it, and then all my emotions just erupted. It was incredibly special."

Path to Representing Ireland

At 27, Hollard, who grew up in Boksburg, South Africa, discussed his journey to playing for Ireland. He stated, "I've wanted to come to Ireland since 2019, but COVID brought many challenges. My brother encouraged me to come, and since then, Cricket Ireland has supported me tremendously. I'm genuinely grateful for their backing."

Significant Milestone for Ireland

With this victory, Ireland has become the 11th team to defeat India in international cricket. They have now beaten eight Full Member nations, leaving only Australia, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka to conquer. Hollard also made history as the first player from Balbriggan Cricket Club to represent Ireland, expressing gratitude to his supporters back home.

Family Presence and Support

On having his family present for his debut, Hollard remarked, "I haven't seen them in a while, and having them here is just perfect. Seeing them cheer for me as I received my cap was unbelievable. To my family back home, I appreciate your support and messages. I know you're celebrating, and it means a lot to me."
