Matheus Nunes Optimistic About Ruben Dias' Fitness Ahead of World Cup
Nunes Expresses Hope for Dias' Recovery
As Portugal prepares for their FIFA World Cup match against DR Congo, star player Matheus Nunes has shared his optimism regarding the fitness of his Manchester City teammate, Ruben Dias. Dias has been training separately from the team for reasons that have not been disclosed, raising concerns among fans about his availability for the crucial Group K match in Houston, scheduled for Wednesday. In a statement, Nunes emphasized the importance of Dias, saying, "We definitely want him on the field for every match because he plays a vital role. He is a key figure in our national team and a strong leader both on and off the pitch. I hope he is fit for the opening game and the rest of the tournament."
Defending Portugal's Training Strategy
Nunes also addressed the media's criticism regarding Portugal's late arrival in the United States and their choice to utilize beach facilities for training in Florida. He explained that this approach is part of their acclimatization strategy. "We spend mornings at the beach to adjust to the climate, which is quite different from Manchester's cooler weather. I believe this is a normal practice and should not suggest that we are prioritizing leisure over training. We train in the afternoons as usual after our beach sessions," he clarified.
Versatility on the Field
The versatile Nunes provides coach Roberto Martinez with options, as he can play both as a full-back and a midfielder. "I feel comfortable in both roles. After nearly a season and a half playing as a full-back, I am well-acquainted with the responsibilities that come with it. I've also played on the left wing and in various positions, so I can adapt easily. At this moment, I don't have a strong preference for either position," he stated.
Nunes' Commitment to Portugal
Having moved from Brazil to Portugal at the age of 12, Nunes chose to represent Portugal over Brazil after receiving a call-up in 2021. He expressed gratitude towards Portugal for the opportunities it has provided him. "I identify with both countries, but in terms of football, I owe more to Portugal for shaping who I am today. Portugal opened doors for me, and despite the challenges, I am proud to have chosen to play for them and feel happy representing Portugal," he concluded.
