Matheesha Pathirana Joins Kolkata Knight Riders

Tim Southee, the bowling coach for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), announced that Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has rejoined the team. Pathirana had been sidelined due to a calf injury sustained during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, missing all of KKR's matches in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. The franchise acquired him for a significant sum of Rs 18 crore during last year's IPL auction.

Southee Discusses Match Preparations

Ahead of KKR's upcoming game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sunday, Southee confirmed Pathirana's return and mentioned that he has already begun training with the squad. He noted that the final team selection for the match will be influenced by the playing conditions. "Yes, he's arrived and has been with the group for a while now. We'll assess the conditions and decide on the best lineup for tomorrow's match. He has been performing well in practice, and it's fantastic to have him back in the team," Southee stated.

High-Scoring IPL 2026 Season

When questioned about the challenges faced by bowlers this season, Southee acknowledged that the current IPL has been particularly tough due to the high-scoring nature of the matches. He explained that favorable batting pitches in India, combined with the Impact Player rule, enable teams to maintain an aggressive approach even after losing wickets. "Yes, the recent IPL seasons have been characterized by high scores. The pitches in India are generally conducive to batting, and the impact player rule allows teams to continue attacking even after losing a few wickets. Teams are now more inclined to play aggressively from the start, especially during the powerplay," he elaborated.

Record-Breaking Batting Performances

This season has already seen some of the highest run totals in IPL history. Notable players like Abhishek Sharma, Priyansh Arya, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and Prabhsimran Singh, along with established stars like Ishan Kishan and Devdutt Padikkal, have been particularly aggressive against bowlers during the Powerplay. The number of 200-plus scores has reached an impressive 36, nearly double the count from the same period four years ago. Additionally, there have been 11 successful chases of 200 or more runs, including Punjab Kings' remarkable pursuit of 265 runs against Delhi Capitals earlier this season.

Upcoming KKR vs SRH Match

KKR aims to halt the momentum of SRH, who are currently on a five-match winning streak. As it stands, KKR is in eighth place on the IPL 2026 points table, having secured two wins and one no-result from their eight matches. In contrast, SRH is positioned third with six victories in nine matches.
