Kolkata, August 6: Authorities at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport in Kolkata apprehended a suspect and confiscated gold and diamond jewellery valued at over Rs 1 crore on Thursday, according to police reports.
Officials indicated that the consignment, which included ruby and emerald-encrusted pieces, was discovered during a security inspection of a domestic cargo shipment. Initial evaluations estimate the gold jewellery's worth to be over Rs 50 lakh, while the diamonds are believed to hold an even greater market value.
The individual, who was there to collect the shipment, raised suspicions among airport staff and police. Following this, he was detained, and the jewellery was recovered after further questioning. The identity of the person has not been disclosed by the authorities.
Investigators are currently examining the shipment's origins, its intended destination, and any potential connections to a broader smuggling operation. The suspect has been taken to the NSCBI Airport Police Station for further interrogation. Police are also working to identify those who may have directed the receiver and to ascertain if others were involved in the scheme.
"A significant quantity of gold and diamond jewellery has been seized, and one person is under interrogation. A case has been filed against him. The investigation aims to clarify the purpose of transporting these items and where they were headed," stated a senior official from the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.
This incident has prompted enhanced security protocols at the airport, with authorities increasing surveillance and monitoring of both passenger and cargo movements as the investigation unfolds.
The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate is actively pursuing the investigation into this matter.
