Massive Blaze Destroys 200 Shops in Kolkata Market
Devastating Fire in Birati's Jadu Babu's Market
Kolkata, Dec 30: A significant fire erupted early Tuesday morning, engulfing approximately 200 shops in Jadu Babu's market located in Birati, within West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district.
The blaze completely destroyed the shops and their contents, leaving shop owners and employees in disbelief. Fortunately, initial reports indicate that there were no casualties.
This well-known market, situated next to the Birati railway station, is a popular spot for both locals and travelers.
According to sources, the fire ignited around 1:30 a.m. and spread rapidly due to strong northern winds.
Seven fire engines were dispatched to combat the flames, but the strong winds hampered their efforts. Witnesses noted that by the time firefighters arrived, the damage was already extensive.
As of Tuesday morning, the situation remained precarious. Firefighters confirmed that while the main source of the fire had been extinguished, smoke continued to billow, and some hotspots were still active.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Eyewitnesses reported that the fire began in a single shop before quickly spreading throughout the market, exacerbated by the area's congested layout.
Local residents expressed concern that the fire could have resulted in a larger disaster, given the nearby residential complexes and houses in this densely populated region. One trader, who lost his electrical shop, recounted, "I received a call urging me to come quickly, but by the time I arrived, everything was gone."
Bidhan Biswas, the chairman of North Dum Dum Municipality, visited the scene along with municipal representatives. He extended support to the affected traders, stating, "We stand with them. This market falls under our jurisdiction, and we will ensure their rehabilitation." He also called for a thorough investigation into the incident.
