Chennai, June 4: A significant fire broke out at the Pallikaranai dump yard on Thursday, causing alarm in various parts of south Chennai as the flames spread to a nearby area where over 100 seized vehicles were stored.

Thick plumes of black smoke from the incident enveloped large areas of Pallikaranai, Velachery, and surrounding neighborhoods, leading to traffic disruptions and raising concerns among local residents.

The fire reportedly started within the expansive dump yard and quickly extended to an adjacent section filled with hundreds of impounded vehicles.

In a matter of minutes, flames consumed multiple rows of cars, leaving many of them as charred remains. These vehicles were situated on land managed by the Greater Chennai Corporation.

Witnesses reported that the towering flames and heavy smoke were visible from several kilometers away. The fire's intensity escalated as flammable materials within the dump yard fueled the flames, complicating initial containment efforts.

As the fire spread to the vehicle storage area, emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene. Fire and Rescue Services arrived with several fire engines and initiated a comprehensive firefighting operation.

Water tankers were also sent to assist in preventing the fire from advancing to nearby areas.

The dense smoke generated by the fire drifted into various residential and commercial zones, causing visibility problems and inconveniencing commuters and local inhabitants.

Motorists traveling along the busy Medavakkam–Velachery route faced significant delays as traffic slowed dramatically due to the smoke-filled conditions.

Officials worked tirelessly for several hours to control the situation and prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the dump yard and vehicle storage area.

While there were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities, the incident resulted in considerable property damage, with over 100 vehicles suffering severe destruction.

Authorities have commenced an evaluation of the damage and are gathering information on the affected vehicles. The precise cause of the fire is still unknown, and an investigation is underway to ascertain how the blaze ignited and if any safety violations played a role.

This is not the first fire incident at the Pallikaranai dump yard, raising fresh concerns regarding fire safety and waste management protocols at the facility.
