Rally for Internally Displaced Persons in Imphal

Imphal, Jan 12: A significant number of internally displaced persons (IDPs), accompanied by members of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), organized a large rally in the Imphal West district on Monday. They are advocating for a secure return to their homes, emphasizing the need for adequate safety measures.

The rally commenced at Takhellambam Leikai, attracting a substantial crowd. Participants marched in groups, brandishing placards and chanting slogans to draw attention to the challenges faced by families residing in relief camps.

Reports indicate that the rally was halted near Keisampat Junction, where tensions flared briefly as protesters engaged in discussions with security forces stationed there.

After the confrontation, a group of approximately 11 representatives, led by COCOMI convenor Khuraijam Athouba, was permitted to advance.

The delegation later convened with officials at the Chief Secretary’s office, where they presented a memorandum requesting immediate government action.

“For the past 30 days, since December 1, we have been submitting memorandums detailing the people's grievances. The government must address the concerns of Manipur's citizens. Unfortunately, the current administration has not even acknowledged our requests. We will persist in demanding responses to all our submissions,” stated Athouba.

Following this, the representatives proceeded to the Raj Bhavan, where they reiterated their demands for the safe return and rehabilitation of IDPs to their original homes.

Further information regarding the memorandum's specifics and any official responses is still pending.

This protest is a continuation of a month-long campaign in December by IDPs and COCOMI, who have been advocating for rehabilitation, resettlement, and the restoration of normalcy for displaced families.
