Manoj Jha Criticizes Government's Decision to Rename MGNREGA Scheme
Criticism of MGNREGA Name Change
On Wednesday, RJD MP Manoj Jha expressed his disapproval of the central government's decision to rename the MGNREGA scheme. He emphasized that having 'Ram' in someone's name does not grant them the freedom to act without accountability. Jha noted that this decision has caused unrest even within the BJP and among NDA allies. He highlighted a significant shift in the funding ratio between the central and state governments, which has changed from 90-10 to 60-40 percent. Jha strongly criticized the government, reiterating that a name change does not provide anyone with the liberty to act irresponsibly.
Government's Funding Ratio Shift
Jha pointed out that the funding ratio under this scheme has been altered from 90-10 to 60-40 percent, undermining its rights-based approach. He questioned who is advising the government on such matters, stating that a scheme that has provided a safety net for the country is now being weakened instead of strengthened.
Opposition to the New Bill
In a related development, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan introduced the Developed India - Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha, also referred to as the VB-G Ram-Gi Bill. This legislation aims to replace the two-decade-old Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The introduction of this bill was met with significant opposition from opposition MPs.
Congress Announces Nationwide Protests
In response to the bill, the Congress party has announced plans for nationwide protests, accusing the BJP and RSS of dismantling rights-based welfare and replacing it with government-controlled charity. The party has instructed its state units to organize demonstrations at all district headquarters. These protests will feature images of Mahatma Gandhi, symbolizing resistance against the erasure of his name and values, and will highlight the potential impact of the new law on millions of beneficiaries.
