Call for Restraint in Political Discourse

Guwahati, March 25: In light of the increasing references to the late Assamese cultural figure Zubeen Garg in political discussions, his uncle, Manoj Borthakur, has urged caution, asking individuals and groups to refrain from exploiting the singer’s name for political gain.

Borthakur expressed to the media that although Zubeen Garg devoted his life to the people of Assam, there were those who did not support or acknowledge him during his lifetime.

“Zubeen dedicated his entire life to the people of Assam, yet some individuals neither supported him nor stood by him. They observed him from afar and, at times, even caused him pain,” he stated.

He voiced his disapproval of the current trend to invoke the singer’s name in the election narrative.

“Now, as elections approach, certain individuals are attempting to use Zubeen’s name with an anti-government slant. They should not underestimate the awareness of the people of Assam. The current generation is astute and can see through such manipulations,” he commented.

Borthakur further urged those involved to uphold neutrality and avoid politicizing the legacy of the beloved artist.

“This group of people should choose to remain silent and neutral. Zubeen was a figure for the people, not a pawn in any political agenda,” he emphasized.

He also accused some individuals of trying to profit from Zubeen Garg’s legacy after his death, through various publications and other avenues, despite not having supported him while he was alive.

Following his passing, certain individuals published books and collections, reaping financial benefits. However, during his lifetime, Zubeen did not receive the acknowledgment or respect he rightfully deserved from them,” he remarked.

Borthakur highlighted that the singer never sought validation from such individuals, emphasizing that his connection with the people was paramount to his life and work.

“Had they written about him or supported him while he was alive, he would have received the recognition he deserved. But Zubeen never craved that kind of approval. He always belonged to the people and will continue to live in their hearts,” Borthakur concluded.
