Historic Achievement in Wrestling

Indian wrestler Manisha Bhanwala has made history by becoming the first woman from India to win a gold medal at the Senior World Wrestling Championships 2026. Reflecting on her remarkable achievement, she stated, "Some individuals are destined to make history." Bhanwala received a warm welcome upon her arrival at Delhi Airport on November 1, following her outstanding performance in Kazakhstan.

In the 59kg final held in Astana, Bhanwala staged a stunning comeback, overcoming a 0-6 deficit to defeat USA's Abigail Elizabeth Nette with a score of 8-6. This victory marks a significant milestone for women's wrestling in India.

Reflections on the Victory

In an interview, Bhanwala expressed that her historic win was hard to articulate. She explained how she turned the challenging start of the final match into an advantage by capitalizing on her opponent's energy depletion. "I can't fully convey this feeling; it's truly unique. The initial attack was tough, but it became beneficial as my opponent exhausted herself. Some people are born to create history, and perhaps I am one of them," she shared.

Looking Ahead: Goals and Support

As she looks to the future, Bhanwala emphasized the importance of the upcoming year, focusing on injury prevention and recovery. "Next year is crucial for me. I must avoid injuries, concentrate on my recovery, and give my best effort," she stated.

She also credited the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for their support, highlighting the significance of their training camps and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) in her preparation. "The WFI has been instrumental in my training. Their support through TOPS and the camps has greatly benefited us," she noted.

Family Pride and Team Accomplishments

Bhanwala's mother, Meena Devi, expressed immense pride in her daughter's success, celebrating the historic win. She encouraged parents to support their daughters in pursuing their dreams. "I am incredibly proud of my daughter; she has brought home the gold. We are filled with joy at home. What Manisha has achieved, other daughters can achieve too. Parents should encourage their daughters to follow their ambitions," she said.

Bhanwala's gold medal capped a successful campaign for the Indian women's wrestling team at the 2026 World Championships, where they secured a total of four medals. Alongside Bhanwala's gold, Kajal Dhochak and Neelam Sirohi earned silver medals, while Tanu Sharma took home bronze in the 72kg category.
