Imphal, March 8: In a significant move to assist women impacted by the ongoing ethnic strife, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced on Sunday that the Manipur government will allocate ₹350 crore to aid approximately 3.5 lakh women throughout the state.
During an event held at the City Convention Centre to celebrate International Women’s Day, the Chief Minister revealed that these funds, provided by the central government, will be incorporated into the forthcoming state budget set for March 9.
Singh emphasized that this initiative is designed to offer financial relief to women, especially considering the difficulties many have encountered amid the current ethnic tensions.
“Women in Manipur have faced tremendous challenges since the onset of violence, leading to significant financial hardships for numerous families,” he remarked.
In his address, Manipur Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel acknowledged the vital contributions of women in shaping the state's social, political, and economic landscape.
He pointed out that the women recognized during the event are just a small representation of the countless individuals across Manipur whose resilience and wisdom have helped navigate through tough times.
“The government is dedicated to fostering gender equality and empowering women through progressive policies, targeted initiatives, and supportive legislative actions,” Goel stated.
He also underscored the transition from focusing solely on women's development to promoting women-led development, highlighting the necessity for collaborative efforts among government bodies, civil society, and communities to ensure equal opportunities for women.
At the event, Olympian weightlifter Ngangom Kunjarani Devi and renowned folk singer Mangka Mayanglambam were honored for their remarkable contributions and achievements.
The gathering included officials from the Social Welfare Department, representatives from women’s organizations, and members of the public.
