Mangesh Yadav: From Humble Beginnings to IPL Stardom
A Father's Dedication
Before Mangesh Yadav stepped onto the professional cricket field, his father, Ramavadh Yadav, toiled through sleepless nights, pondering how to fund his son's aspirations. He poured all his resources into nurturing a boy who first played cricket in a small courtyard alongside his mother. Now, Mangesh has secured a contract worth Rs 5.2 crore with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, as reported.
The Early Struggles and Support
Hailing from Borgaon in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district, the 23-year-old Mangesh grew up in a modest environment. His uncle recognized his talent during local tennis ball tournaments and encouraged him to travel to Delhi for training under coach Phool Chand Sharma. Mangesh expressed, "If I am playing cricket today, it is because of Phool Chand sir."
He recalled, "When I went to Delhi, my father managed to give me Rs 24,000 with great difficulty. I was unsure how that money vanished in the first month." His father often sought help from acquaintances to fund Mangesh's training.
Phool Chand Sharma noted, "Mangesh was living with someone in Delhi. I recognized his bowling talent, but he often struggled to afford meals. I invited him to stay at the hostel, which marked the beginning of his journey. I believe that if a player has talent, they should have the opportunity to eat, stay, and practice, regardless of their financial situation."
A Critical Turning Point
Mangesh also reflected on a time when he lost motivation. "I had started to become complacent. One day, sir told me to pack my bag and go home. After some time, I apologized and promised it wouldn't happen again. I realized what I was risking and thought about my family's sacrifices. My father was working tirelessly for me."
Overcoming Challenges
Determined to seize his chance, Mangesh immersed himself in rigorous training. He participated in the DDCA league, local tournaments, and even made it to the UP U-19 camp, but the next opportunity remained elusive.
His father shared, "There were instances when he traveled to selection camps only to be told his name was mistakenly called. During those moments, I felt helpless, questioning whether I had made a mistake by encouraging his dream."
The Breakthrough Moment
Mangesh's breakthrough came during the Madhya Pradesh T20 League, where he took 14 wickets in just six matches, boasting an impressive average of 12.00. After representing Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket alongside RCB captain Rajat Patidar, he finally received the long-awaited call from Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Trials and Triumph
During the trials, his adaptability was put to the test. "DK [Dinesh Karthik] sir approached me and said, 'You are bowling well. Now show me this ball.' He had me bowl in various scenarios, from the new ball to the final overs. It was enlightening to witness how a player of his caliber thinks."
A Dream Fulfilled, A Father's Pride
Post-auction, Mangesh felt immense gratitude towards his coach for his unwavering support. "When I returned to the club, I wanted to meet him and express my gratitude for believing in me and investing so much in my future."
Years of his father's sacrifices had finally borne fruit. "When my father supported my cricket ambitions, many in our extended family and community thought he was foolish, believing I would fail. I am just happy now; my father can walk with pride," Mangesh stated.
His father added, "I never imagined a truck driver could earn such respect. Mangesh has given me more than I could have ever hoped for."
