In a significant development, the police in Mandi have successfully apprehended three suspects linked to the brutal murder of a 78-year-old Buddhist nun in the Sarkidhar region of Rewalsar. This breakthrough follows an extensive investigation that lasted over a month and extended into neighboring states.
Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar informed the media that over fifty individuals were interviewed during the investigation. He stated, “Our teams also traveled to neighboring states to follow up on leads. After thorough questioning and technical analysis, we identified a key suspect, Gagan Sharma from Kasol, which was pivotal in solving this heinous crime.”
The suspects have been named as Gagan Sharma (23), Gaurav Sharma (20), and Vishal (23), who resides in Shimla. All three are connected to the Sarkidhar and Balh regions of Mandi district. The police confirmed that the arrests were made after a detailed examination of mobile phone records, toll barrier data, and field intelligence.
According to the SP, “Gagan Sharma was arrested during a late-night operation, which led to the subsequent capture of the other two suspects.”
The victim, Orje Shoki, lived alone in a hut adjacent to the Naina Devi forest and was known for her religious practices at a nearby monastery. Local sources indicated that she frequently performed prayers and rituals, receiving monetary offerings from devotees. It is suspected that she may have had cash on her, making her a target.
Investigators are also looking into information suggesting that the grandmother of the main suspect regularly visited the nun to deliver milk. This connection implies that Gagan Sharma was likely acquainted with the victim and her daily routine, which may have influenced the crime.
The body of the victim was discovered on March 4, showing multiple severe injuries caused by a sharp weapon, highlighting the brutality of the attack. Initial findings suggest that the suspects are habitual drug users, and the crime may have been committed either to obtain narcotics or for robbery.
SP Vinod Kumar mentioned, “The precise motive is still under investigation. We are exploring all possibilities. Details from the post-mortem report cannot be shared at this time.”
The police indicated that the three suspects will be presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) on Saturday, where they will seek remand for further questioning. “Further legal actions will proceed according to the law,” the SP added, emphasizing that efforts are ongoing to piece together the complete sequence of events.
This case, which has raised significant concern due to the victim's age and her secluded living situation, is now viewed as a major achievement for the district police, while also highlighting serious issues related to drug abuse and violent crime in the area.
