Mandi Hosts Sixth State-Level Pencak Silat Championship with 220 Athletes
Inauguration of the Championship
The sixth State-Level Pencak Silat Championship kicked off today in Mandi, attracting 220 athletes from seven districts of Himachal Pradesh, competing across various age groups. This event also highlighted the pressing need for equal respect and opportunities for athletes in the region.
Call for Recognition of Kabaddi Players
During the opening ceremony, Narendra Atri, Vice President of the Himachal Pradesh Olympic Association, urged the state government to promptly recognize and honor the women Kabaddi players from Himachal who recently triumphed in the Kabaddi World Cup. Atri emphasized the importance of treating all athletes fairly, advocating for equal recognition across different sports.
He pointed out that if cricket players receive rewards, then Kabaddi champions should be acknowledged similarly.
Historical Context and Future Steps
Atri reminisced about the time when former Chief Minister Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal increased the sports quota in government jobs from 1% to 3%, which greatly benefited local athletes. He stressed that similar initiatives are essential today to enhance the sports environment and ensure equity among all sports disciplines.
Details of the Championship
Joginder Singh Azad, President of the Himachal Pradesh Pencak Silat Association, shared that the championship, which was postponed due to rain, is now underway with participants in age categories ranging from 3 to over 45 years. He clarified that this championship will not serve as a selection trial for national events, as the National Championship has already occurred, and state athletes have participated. Future competitions will determine selections for upcoming national tournaments.
Community Support
The local sporting community in Mandi has expressed enthusiasm for the successful organization of the Silat championship and the renewed advocacy for equal respect and opportunities for all athletes in Himachal Pradesh.
