Kolkata: In a significant political move, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has resigned from 23 different roles she held across various departments and affiliated organizations, as per an official announcement made on Tuesday.
The state's home department has instructed relevant government counterparts to take the necessary actions to accept her resignations from these positions, including any others not explicitly mentioned in her letter.
Banerjee is contesting the upcoming Assembly elections from the Bhabanipur constituency in south Kolkata, where she will face off against Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition.
The official letter stated, “I am directed to forward a copy of the communication which would reveal that Mamata Banerjee has, with immediate effect, resigned from the offices/posts as mentioned in the enclosed list.”
Among the key positions she vacated are the head of the state health mission, chairperson of the state wildlife board, and the governing body of the West Bengal Urdu Academy, among others.
Additionally, she has stepped down from her role as the chief of the organizing committee for the Bangla Sangeet Mela and the head of the state SC and Tribes advisory councils, as well as from the State Disaster Management Authority.
Departments have been instructed to ensure that immediate actions are taken to formalize the acceptance of her resignations across all relevant offices.
The communication also requested officials to provide a compliance report regarding the acceptance of these resignations by 4 PM on Wednesday.
Officials noted that this decision necessitates prompt administrative follow-up across various departments to finalize the transition of responsibilities.
