Mamata Banerjee's Protest Against BJP's Recent Victory
On Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), initiated a one-day sit-in protest in central Kolkata in response to alleged attacks on party workers and leaders following the BJP's recent assembly election victories. After the Kolkata police denied TMC's request to demonstrate on Rani Rashmoni Road, she arrived at the protest site located at the Esplanade's Y-Channel. Addressing the crowd through a megaphone, Banerjee expressed frustration over being denied permission to set up a stage or use a microphone.
During her speech, chaos erupted as TMC workers began chanting slogans. Banerjee accused the BJP of manipulating the vote count in 177 out of 294 seats to secure their win in the Bengal assembly elections. She claimed that police were threatening TMC members against participating in protests, asserting her commitment to continue the demonstrations. Banerjee emphasized that displacing street vendors without providing rehabilitation was not the TMC government's policy, stating that they had adopted a humane approach. She affirmed her unwavering support for TMC workers during these challenging times.
Pointing towards Shuvendu Adhikari, she expressed regret that individuals she once supported were now aligning with traitors. Banerjee announced that opposition parties would convene in Delhi to strategize a nationwide plan against the BJP. At the protest site, she declared, "I will fight or die." Despite the challenges, she claimed that the departure of leaders for personal interests would aid in rebuilding the organization, making the TMC emerge stronger from this crisis. She questioned why people were fearful and anxious, noting a drastic change in the atmosphere, stating that Kolkata and Bengal had been handed over to goons.
Most of the new faces who won assembly seats on TMC tickets were absent, while veteran leaders like Firhad Hakim, Madan Mitra, Derek O'Brien, Kalyan Banerjee, and Dola Sen were present alongside Banerjee. Nonetheless, she reiterated that the protest against the attack on her nephew and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, the alleged post-election violence, and the eviction of street vendors would continue as planned until evening.
