Mamata Banerjee's Protest Against BJP's Post-Poll Violence

Kolkata: On Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), staged a dharna in central Kolkata to voice her concerns over alleged attacks on party members following the BJP's recent electoral success in the Assembly elections.

Banerjee emphasized her commitment to TMC workers, stating that she would not abandon them despite the party's recent electoral setback.

During her day-long protest at the Y-channel in Esplanade, she announced that opposition parties would soon come together to devise a nationwide strategy against the BJP.

She mentioned, "In the coming days, all anti-BJP parties will convene in Delhi. Stay tuned for our announcement regarding a unified action plan across the country," alluding to the upcoming meeting of the INDIA bloc.

Banerjee arrived at the protest site after the Kolkata Police denied permission for the TMC to hold the demonstration on the nearby Rani Rashmoni Road.

"We were not allowed to set up a stage or use microphones," she remarked while addressing the crowd with a megaphone.

The protest was lively, with TMC supporters chanting slogans throughout Banerjee's speech.

Notably, she was joined by veteran party members such as Firhad Hakim, Madan Mitra, Derek O'Brien, Kalyan Banerjee, and Dola Sen, while many newly elected representatives were noticeably absent.

The TMC chief confirmed that the dharna, aimed at protesting the recent attack on her nephew and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, as well as the alleged post-poll violence and hawker evictions, would persist until the evening as planned.
